Robert F. Heary, MD, attended high school in Wayne, New Jersey. Following graduation in 1977, he took a “gap” year. He enrolled in Muhlenberg College, in 1978, in the Pre Med program with a Natural Science major. After completing Muhlenberg College, graduating magna cum laude, Dr. Heary was accepted to the prestigious University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Heary graduated from Pitt Med School, in 1986, and began a general surgery residency at UMDNJ in Newark, New Jersey. After 3 years, Dr. Heary transferred to the neurosurgery residency training program where he completed another 5 years. After completing residency training, Dr. Heary went to Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia where he completed an Orthopedic Spine surgery fellowship.
In 1995, Dr. Heary returned to UMDNJ to begin work as an Assistant Professor in Neurosurgery. After becoming ABNS Board Certified (1999), he progressed to the ranks of Associate Professor (2001) and then Full Professor (2005). He worked for 25 years as a clinical neurosurgeon, and he also directed a basic science laboratory for the training of college students, medical students, and residents-in-training.
In 2020, Dr. Heary shifted his practice to become the Chief of Neurosurgery at Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair, New Jersey. At this time, he switched his academic affiliation to become a Professor at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Dr. Heary currently performs clinical neurosurgery at Mountainside Medical Center and at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey.
During his career, Dr. Heary has had many leadership roles in organized neurosurgery and spine surgery societies. In his prolific academic career, Dr. Heary has authored 184 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 75 chapters in medical textbooks, and he edited 4 textbooks on spine surgery. Dr. Heary has also served as the Chair of the Spine Section (2005), President of the Cervical Spine Research Society (2016), President of the Lumbar Spine Research Society (2018), and Vice President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (2020) among numerous other societal leadership positions. Dr. Heary is a nationally and internationally renowned neurosurgeon with special expertise in spinal surgery.
